About Heart and Sew
The picture below is of my daughter and me at our first craft show. She inspired me to start selling my hand-made designs because she saw the joy each new design gave me. I love to play with fabrics and spend hours trying to select the perfect coordinating designs of fabric and matching zippers and embellishments.
I have sewn for 55 years. I learned to sew in Home Economics in High School. That class and my Shorthand class have proven to be the most beneficial classes from my school days. Shorthand helped me throughout the years by enabling me to take notes in college, or in my jobs, or at church. It is a powerful tool. I am so thankful for my teacher, Anita Horton Miller, for her skills as an educator.
In my 20's I made all my clothes. In my 40's, I made baby blankets for my friends who were having babies. Then, in my 60's, I started making Tote Bags and the things you see in the photo below. My sister was diagnosed with Small Cell Lung Cancer in May of 2024. She needed a large tote bag for trekking back and forth to her Chemo Treatments. So I made one. She loved it. Then I made another, and then another. Each one I made was claimed by her as "her favorite". I made her a lap quilt to keep her warm during treatments. And then started making smaller pouches to help her organize all of her necessities.
I sewed and sewed, ripped out threads, resewed, and continued to make things for her. Not quite a year later, she lost her battle and passed away just before her 72nd birthday. This was the hardest loss of my life.
In her honor, and at the encouragement of my daughter, I have continued designing and creating 'cute' things. But, they are not just cute, they are practical. I'm certainly not a pro, but just love getting lost in the middle of a pile of fabric. It's good for my soul, which is how I came up with the name of my Company - Heart and Sew.
